OmegaLemmy, to games in Android games

If a phone game is actually good it generally will also be ported to pc and consoles, so that should be a good point of reference

bjoern_tantau,

And vice versa.

jacksilver,

I thought I had a couple of counter examples, but every good game on my phone has a steam port (or originated on PC).

I really thought Miracle Sudoku would be phone only, but even that exists on steam.

Hahaha great autocorrect, not changing it.

Omegamanthethird, to games in What's the greatest joy you have gotten from a video game?
@Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world avatar

Wandering around in Morrowind before I really knew what I was doing, being happy just to find a few coins in a tree stump or a crappy dagger.

Other games have given more extreme emotions. But no other game has instilled such a joyous sense of wonder.

Of course it is very important to have the start button in an easy to reach location.

lIlIllIlIIIllIlIlII,

I would say that initially they located it there to get some symmetry because aesthetic reasons.

DmMacniel, to retrogaming in TIL GameCube's d-pad was added at the last moment

And good that they changed it at the last moment. Sure the D-PAD is super stiff but can you imagine games like Metroid Prime without it?

DannyBoy,

Could put a layer on the C stick like Metroid Prime remastered to have one input handle both visors and beams.

lIlIllIlIIIllIlIlII,

I can imagine external developers asking Nintendo for a d-pad.

romamix, to technology in Is it possible to design a social media app or service that rather than focuses on farming engagement, it tries to promote quality content?

Professional communities with invite-only registration, where invites are only distributed to people with high ratings. Also you can add higher barriers, like a requirement to write a valuable on-topic to get rating above a certain level, regardless of the comment rating level. Basically a self-moderated narrowly focused community with invite only registration.

vane, to technology in Is it possible to design a social media app or service that rather than focuses on farming engagement, it tries to promote quality content?

It was called newspaper back in the day. Printing something was expensive so quality must have been good, that people were willing to read it. And social part was provided by posting letter to the newspaper adress with a hope to be printed.

taladar,

As someone who has lived through some of the time with newspapers and without social media, no, quality was pretty bad back then too.

threaded-discussion server products require far more resources than a simple mastodon, twitter like server. if you want to federate with the threadiverse its going to be resource intensive.

realcaseyrollins,
@realcaseyrollins@thelemmy.club avatar

Why is this the case?

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

twitter/mastodon is just an old man shouting into the cloud (single to many). the discussion is very limited in scope. forums (many to many) are much more intensive due to the volume of human activity and its nested interactions with said data.

even if you just look at the biggest players thats dozens of servers with 100k users all upvoting/replying/moderating and your instance needs to process that if you want a decent interaction.

lime, to games in What's the greatest joy you have gotten from a video game?

the ending of outer wilds, figuring out that the treasure really was the friends we made along the way, will always stand out to me as the most magnificent, joy-filled moment in my 25+ year gaming experience.

that, or getting the cool sunglasses in fez.

boaratio,

Outer Wilds is the correct answer. I wish I could unlearn that memory and play it again from scratch.

Getting to the top of the mountain in Celeste. It may not be the hardest challenge in the game (screw you Farewell), but just arriving there with the soundtrack swelling felt so good.

Completing the golden path in Tunic.

Any number of silly things in FFXI that at the time probably felt immensely important.

PonyOfWar, to technology in Is it possible to design a social media app or service that rather than focuses on farming engagement, it tries to promote quality content?

Sure. But will it be profitable and will enough people want to use it? I think most likely the answer is no.

fmstrat,

First link at least is wildly over-claiming the difference. The data they describe is all cached in the browser and occurs once. PieFed uses ActivityPub, so network differences are moot since the same data transfers.

graycube, to fediverse in I need a Facebook replacement

Facebook Marketplace is my favorite part of Facebook. Thoughts about what might replace that?

classic,

Mercuri seems to be becoming more popular

catloaf,

Right up until it asks for ID, which you have to use the app for, and even if you send it nothing happens and your account remains disabled.

Ask me how I know. And that was for my very first purchase.

mesamunefire,

Not ironically craigslist never went away in some places.

n2burns, to technology in would you buy a compact laptop that has spacebar touch sensitivity and allows you to adjust input sensitivity, giving it dual purpose (a spacebar and a mouse)+ it has integrated A5 printer in it?

That sounds awful. We already have trackpoint to use a mouse in a compact device.

The printer would add so much bulk that it would no longer be a compact laptop anymore. I know you personally want one (from your recent post), but just carry a separate device or velcro it to the back of the laptop.
