punseye, in US adds web and gaming giant Tencent to list of Chinese military companies

Lol pretty much every American company should be added to a similar list given how deep they are in the pockets of CIA, etc

Cosmicomical, in Elon Musk announces changes as 'too much negativity' being pushed on X

Right, he should remove the last few humans and replace them with bots.

affiliate, in Meta scrambles to delete its own AI accounts after backlash intensifies | CNN Business

i find it incredible that despite having access to basically unlimited information about its users, facebook makes stupid decisions that seem almost designed to piss off its users. and then you have situations like this, where facebook was told ahead of time that this decision would make a lot of people angry, and then facebook went and did it anyway only to walk it back a few days later and say it was a mistake. why?

Appoxo,

Remember when Google Glass generated backlash?
Now we have those AI pins that have a camera and mic, multiple smart glasses with HUDs and cameras, Smart Home devices that record constantly).

Try it -> Backlash -> Walk it back
Try again 5 months later -> No backlash -> Continue

FireWire400, in Dell kills the XPS brand
@FireWire400@lemmy.world avatar

The latest XPS laptops really seem like they wanted to copy MacBook Pros from a few years ago with the touch function keys and the barren I/O.

I never really understood the purpose of the XPS line anyway. If you want performance, buy a Precision; if you want a light robust laptop with decent I/O, get a Latitude; if you want a MacBook, get a MacBook.

With that being said the new naming scheme sounds like a joke.

rumba,

I never really understood the purpose of the XPS line anyway. I

IMHO

Software development and Media work that can benefit from normal consumer video acceleration. They are a lot cheaper than the Precision line and for non-cad/AI tasks and generally outpreform them. The XPS cases are more durable than the latitude and they come with better options for processors and video cards.

From a business standpoint, they were the best option if you needed a normal video accelerator.

avieshek, in Telegram reports spike in sharing user data with law enforcement | TechCrunch

Element.io ~

unexposedhazard,

Im pretty sure matrix.org data has been and will be sharing data with law enforcement. Even if you use encryption, they collect loads of metadata. With smaller servers it depends on local jurisdiction i guess.

EngineerGaming,
@EngineerGaming@feddit.nl avatar

Matrix.org is one of my big concerns with Matrix, as it oversees most big groupchats. If you selfhost your server, chances are it is still observing some of your conversations due to just how big and prevalent it is.

unexposedhazard,

The moment they start rolling out any closed or paid features and the immediate reaction of the community isnt forking the entire protocol, i will ditch matrix. Ive become very trigger happy with this stuff.

shortwavesurfer,

Better, but still not great, because a lot of metadata gets collected even if the conversations themselves do not. Might I suggest SimpleX instead?
