dh3lix, in VIDEO: Why is Nintendo 64 emulation still a broken mess in 2025?

N64 stuff runs brilliant on MisterFpga tho.

FPGA emulation is another level. The video says that FPGA emulation is near flawless except homebrew.

An interesting video, but I don't really feel it got to answer the question posed. He also didn't, for me, answer why he wants to focus on LLE instead of HLE as it's been obvious that LLE is very resource intensive.

lIlIllIlIIIllIlIlII,

Maybe is too soon for cycle accuracy N64 emulators. We will get it eventually.

That was my issue with the video as well

prole, in VIDEO: Why is Nintendo 64 emulation still a broken mess in 2025?

I thought Kaze pretty much reverse engineered the whole thing? Or is that just for Mario 64?

Feel free to commit a pull request

SomethingBurger,

The creator of this video is an emulator developer.

9tr6gyp3,

And?

lime,

that means they are about it.

TachyonTele,

Lol this is the best interaction. Props.

But without it how would I have tainted my opponents after I cheese them off the edge in smash bros?

imPastaSyndrome,

tainted

Hahaha great autocorrect, not changing it.

Chozo, in TIL GameCube's d-pad was added at the last moment

I think "last moment" is a bit of a stretch. It may have been weeks before the Space World reveal, but the Space World event was a full year before the console released.

lIlIllIlIIIllIlIlII,

Yes, you are right.

DmMacniel, in TIL GameCube's d-pad was added at the last moment

And good that they changed it at the last moment. Sure the D-PAD is super stiff but can you imagine games like Metroid Prime without it?

DannyBoy,

Could put a layer on the C stick like Metroid Prime remastered to have one input handle both visors and beams.

lIlIllIlIIIllIlIlII,

I can imagine external developers asking Nintendo for a d-pad.

Of course it is very important to have the start button in an easy to reach location.

lIlIllIlIIIllIlIlII,

I would say that initially they located it there to get some symmetry because aesthetic reasons.

I would love a super casual sonic-esque game that you could just mindless meander through without having to worry about falling into environmental hazards or bumping into enemies. Basically just complete and utter freedom to blast through a level without having to think too much about it and not having to fuss with a lot of different controls/buttons. Wonder if anything like that exists.

Rise and shine, Mr. Freeman. Rise and shine.

MudMan, in Sonic Galactic Is So Good "It Could Stand As An Official Sega Product"

I'm always a bit weirded out by these super good fangames that clearly are a sprite swap away from being viable commercial products because... man, just make your own game, you clearly can do it. But at the same time, it would likely not be nearly as popular without it being skinned as a Sonic or a Castlevania or whatever, which is a bit of a bummer.

In other news, go play Penny's Big Breakaway. It's good.

mesamunefire,

Freedom planet 1/2 is also good.

MudMan,

Yeah, for sure. I find it needs less of a defense because it was an early indie darling built on top of a fangame foundation, while Penny's ended up being a bit of a bomb on the back of not having stuck to the license or the specific set of Sonic mechanics.

Both are worth a try, I'm just saying that Penny's could use the attention more.

weirdo_from_space,

Developer of Sonic Before/After the Sequel actually did that, Spark the Electric Jester. First game is classic Sonic meets Kirby while second and third are Sonic Adventure inspired.

VerilyFemme, in 26 years late but I finally beat Half Life

Fantastic game. What a year for landmark video games, too.

That looks too good to be an official Sega product.

DarkThoughts,

I was about to say that. Honestly looks better than anything released since the first games on the Mega Drive.

someguy3, in 26 years late but I finally beat Half Life

I beat it for the first time a couple years ago. Not too shabby. I think I had to look up how to do the platforming in xen.

Blue shift and Opposing force are neat add-ons to hl1.

The Orange Box is one of the last gaming purchases that I actually got my moneys worth out of.

Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In,

Orange box was amazing value for money
